Participate in the CEDAW process

The examination of New Zealand’s eighth periodic report on the United Nations Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) is scheduled for the 70th session of the Committee, on 12 July 2018, at the United Nations Headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland.

The provisional schedule for the 70th session provides two main forums for NGOs to engage with the Committee:

  • 9 July 2018 – A one hour public meeting, during which New Zealand NGOs have 10 minutes collectively to deliver statements that are broadcast on webtv.un.org
  • 11 July 2018 – A one hour closed meeting with New Zealand NGOs.

The Committee welcomes country-specific information from national NGOs in relation to the state reports before it. Information about how to make oral and written submissions to the Committee is available at the Human Rights Commission. More details on pre-session meetings as well as training and mentoring services, can be obtained from International Women's Rights Action Watch Asia Pacific.

A detailed guide for NGO participation can be found here and more information can also be found on the Committee’s website or by contacting the Committee directly at cedaw@ohchr.org.

We encourage individuals and organisations to participate in the CEDAW process and to make a submission to the Committee about things they believe it should consider or be aware of.
