Join us at the WEA for this two part lecture series looking at the Challenges of Women's Biography with a special look at the Life of Kate Sheppard on the 19th of September.

Learn about some of the Invercargill and Southland suffragists researched so far and how you can upload your story of the suffragists to the ever-expanding database about the Women’s Suffrage Petition.

A presentation led by Katherine C’Ailceta from Archives New Zealand who will talk about the lead up to the suffrage petition, how it was undertaken and passed into law.

This meeting will cover the Waimate Women who signed the Suffrage Petition which resulted in Parliament passing the Bill (by two votes) in 1893, giving all women aged 21 and over, the vote.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern is the keynote speaker for this event celebrating the 125th anniversary of suffrage. She’ll lead a Q&A session with young women leaders from secondary schools throughout our city
