Be willing to negotiate

Sheryl Sandberg, Chief Operating Officer at Facebook since 2008 and author of Lean In: Women, Work and the Will to Lead, suggests that too many women suffer from what she describes as ‘The Tiara Syndrome’ and this may explain their reluctance to negotiate. 

Symptoms include keeping your head down, delivering excellent work and hoping that the right people will notice — and place a tiara on your head!

Hoping that other people will notice and reward your hard work is not something that can be counted on.  Sandberg argues that effective negotiation is a prerequisite to “leaning in” or being proactive and assertive on behalf of your career.

Finding employment in a challenging job market can seem a long and difficult process and you may feel grateful just to get an offer.  You may even feel like you are jeopardising your chances of getting the job by attempting to negotiate salary.  This is not the case.  Once an employer has chosen you as the candidate they want to hire, you’re usually in a very good position to negotiate.
