Gender representation and pay equity are really important issues for Meridian.
Meridian Energy is one of New Zealand’s largest listed companies, and sells electricity to customers through two brands - Meridian and Powershop.
Meridian generates around a third of the country’s electricity needs from renewable sources, and has a focus on reducing emissions and ensuring New Zealand has the advantages of a green economy, fuelled by renewable energy.
Chief Executive Neal Barclay believes it is important to have an inclusive culture and a focus on gender equity, and has supported Meridian to measure, take action, and report on its gender pay gap over many years.
"We've had a strong policy setting... to make sure that all managers understand that pay equity is critical to us. On top of that, we're trying to address those areas in terms of our workforce make-up where we're underrepresented. We have mentoring systems in place, development programmes for individual women that we see as really talented and that can come through to those senior leadership roles."
